چکیده

An N-tone Σ∆ converter is obtained by introducing N zeros in the noise transfer function (NTF) while maintaining a flat signal transfer function (STF). N-tone Σ∆ converters are particularly well suited for multi-carrier systems. While oversampling is a widely used technique to improve the resolution of the converter, different methods will have to be explored for systems with low over-sampling. Even though, the achievable resolution is limited by the number of bits per Nyquist sample, using higher-order loop-filters and multi-bit loop quantizers can be used to achieve high resolution. But, the former is prone to instability and the latter is sensitive to DAC linearity. However, use of cascaded converters has proven to overcome these inherent disadvantages of the before-mentioned methods. In this paper, we extend this existing low-pass technique to the N-Tone Σ∆ converters.

A second-order VCO-based ∆Σ ADC using a modified DPLL

Introduction: Voltage-controlled oscillators (VCO) have drawn a lot of attention from data converter community recently [1–5]. A VCO acts as an integrator in phase domain and can form a basic building block in time-domain analog-to-digital converters (ADCs), similar to operational transconductance amplifiers (OTAs) in traditional voltage-domain ADCs. Due to the highly digital nature of VCOs, th...

Oversampling and noise-shaping techniques, such as Σ∆ modulation, have an inherent tradeoff between accuracy and speed, whereby resolution in amplitude is at the expense of resolution in time. Because their internal circuits must operate over many clock cycles to produce a single result, they have limited data rates and power dissipation is a concern. Much attention has been focused on improvin...

On Fixed-order Filter Design for Uncertain Cascaded 2-1 Sigma-delta Modulators: a Dilated Plant Approach

This paper presents a new method to design the digital filters for correcting uncertain 2-1 cascaded sigma-delta (Σ∆) modulators. The main contribution of this paper consists of two parts. First, we develop a new filter design method, based on H∞ loop shaping technique, to deal with a certain weighted matching condition with polytopic uncertainties in parameters. The feature of the proposed met...

Wireless and wireline communication applications demand A/D converters with MHz signal bandwidth and 14b or better resolution. Compared with switched-capacitor (SC) implementations, continuous-time (CT) Σ∆ modulators have the advantages of lower power consumption and intrinsic anti-alias filtering. Moreover, as the sampler is inside of the CT Σ∆ loop (see the upper half of Fig. 3.5.1), any samp...
